Our bodies thrive in a slightly alkaline state, a pH of about 7.4 (neutral being 5, acid being below that). When we introduce too much acidity into the body our immunity is lowered and it is a more hospitable environment for things such as bacteria and yeasts. Things such as stress and food choices can alter your pH. Here is a general idea of what foods are alkaline- or acid-forming:

Some Alkaline Forming Foods:

– Fruits and vegetables
– Alkaline Grains: Millet, Buckwheat, and sprouted grains
– Fermented soy products
– Coffee and tea
– Honey
– Most spices and herbs
– Mineral and soda water
– Almonds, brazil nuts, and sprouted seeds
– Lima Beans and sprouted beans

Acid Forming Foods:

– Protein-rich foods, esp. animal foods: meat, dairy, fist, egg whites
– Most grains, beans, and nuts (excluding those on the other list)
– Butter, cream, and nut oils
– Alcohol and soft drinks
– Most concentrated sweeteners
– Cranberries, pomegranates, plums, rhubarb
– Chemical Additives and drugs

It is also important to use your senses and intuition to determine what the quality of food is. When you listen to your body, there is no need to rely on a list!
