A Petition Against Monsanto-Syngenta Merger
Monsanto just announced plans to merge with the chemical giant Syngenta.
This mega-merger would make Monsanto the biggest seed company AND the biggest pesticide company in the world — giving it a near-monopoly over worldwide agricultural production from beginning to end.
Monsanto already has so much power in agricultural production that farmers around the world are forced to use their genetically engineered seeds and pesticides. Taking over Syngenta would make Monsanto even bigger.
Monsanto is the world’s largest seed company. Syngenta is the world’s third-largest seed company. Meanwhile, Syngenta is the world’s largest pesticide company. Monsanto is the world’s fifth-largest pesticide company.
Together, they’d dominate both seeds and pesticides, and have even more power to force their genetically engineered, pesticide-soaked brand of agribusiness on small farmers.
The good news is that since Monsanto is an American company and Syngenta is Swiss, anti-trust regulators in both the U.S. and the E.U. have the power to block this mega-merger. 75,000 SumOfUs members have already spoken out about the deal.
